A unique relatively young furniture brand bringing Norwegian design classics from the 1950s and 1960s back into production. Eikund, meaning oak, likes to be inspired by the imposing Norwegian nature, the same applies to the designers of that time. The Flagship piece is the iconic Fluffy armchair, but they also have several other surprising dining chairs, comfortable loungers and very nice tables in their collection.
EIKUND PHILOSOPHY AND THEIR DESIGNERS
Eikund is all about responsibly making furniture from natural materials that. Through timeless design and high quality, provides Eikund furniture that not only brings daily joy but also lasts a life time. This is achieved by using the best materials and production techniques in a maximally sustainable way.
The Norwegian furniture designers often have had experience in furniture workshops at an early age. For the most part, they then studied at the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry in Oslo. The Norwegians, like their Danish, Finnish and Swedish colleagues, were part of the internationally popular movement Scandinavian design in the 1950s and 1960s. One of the most talented designers of that period is Fredrik Kayser.
THE MODELS AND THEIR FUNCTIONS.
Besides the iconic Fluffy lounge chair from 1954, designer Fredrik A. Kayser also designed the famous Krysset lounge chair in 1955 and the elegant Hertug dining chair in 1959. The latter fits perfectly in a high-end dining room or restaurant and is equal to its Danish contemporaries.
His contemporary Torbjørn Bekken is responsible for the luxurious Veng series from Eikund in 1960. Besides the comfortable lounge chair with wide back, is the arm chair one of the most generous dining chair and therefore perfect for evening dining.
The Era dining chair, designed by Sven Ivar Dysthe in 1956, is perhaps the most surprising chair in the collection. With a statement wooden T back and a curved steel frame, is it not only unique but also stackable which makes it very practical in a hospitality environment.
The most elegant lounger in their collection is undoubtedly the Broadway (1958), and the boldest is the Hunter chair (1960), both designed by Torbjørn Afdal. These lounge chairs are charismatic with a lot of attention to the details, witch makes them a must have for mid-century modern lovers.
The oval extendable Øya dining table is one of the most elegant mid-century tables currently in production. Designed in 1956 by Sigurd Resell, the table has the ability to add up to four pieces of extension leaves, extending it from 210cm to 450cm. This allows 14 people to easily sit and eat at it, which makes it a perfect table for people who want to have a big dinner a few times a year.
On top of that, Sigurd Resell also designed the very elegant Jaer bar stool that is included in the collection since 1959.
THE CRAFTSMANSHIP AND HISTORY OF EIKUND
The idea of the brand Eikund was born in the summer of 2015, when a couple of design-inspired men with an eye for quality were wondering why Norwegian furniture design classics had not yet received the attention they deserved.
Considering how many timeless classics have been designed over time, as proud Norwegians they wanted to offer the world this great selection of furniture, like the Danes are doing all along.
As a result, the gentlemen spent several years collecting the rights to hundreds of furniture designs. Some from the heirs, some from the companies that once produced them and some from the heirs of the companies that once produced them.
From these, about 12 designs were initially selected. The next step was to start producing the designs with local craftsmen to see how we could produce them as responsibly as possible today.
Production is now located at a furniture workshops in Norway and Denmark. Slowly but surely Eikund is beginning to roll out internationally, they are now represented in Norway, Copenhagen, Australia, Singapore, New York, London and, of course, Utrecht. In January 2022, the Wonders chair gallery was the first presentation of the brand on mainland Europe (outside Norway) and we are also the only dealer of the unique brand in the Netherlands.
