MAS by Karimoku

The name MAS combines 'Masu' - a traditional Japanese drinking cup - with the ambition to achieve mass production with local materials.

MAS develops wooden furniture from a local Japanese tree, the Hinoki, an iconic cypress. The soft Hinoki wood presents challenges, but thanks to Karimoku Furniture's innovative techniques, ingenuity and years of experience, solutions are found to create beautiful furniture. The result is fantastic, the typical beautiful wood grain, the warm touch and soothing scent of Hinoki.

Philosophy and Designers

By researching new techniques with this special soft wood type Hinoki, a Japanese Cypress, Karimoku produces unique furniture but with a universal appeal. The pieces are simple and beautiful. Karimoku Furniture appointed Wataru Kumano as creative director of MAS, highlighting their brand vision and commitment to improvements in Japan's forestry and wood furniture industries.

Because product designer Wataru Kumano studied in Finland and upon returning to Japan he focused fanatically on the themes of the environment, regional features and functionality.

He worked for Jasper Morrison in Japan for a few years and in 2011 he founded his design agency "kumano" and has since been working on projects with domestic and foreign furniture makers such as Nikari, Karimoku and Tendo Mokko.

The Models and Their Applications

The Mas collection is compact. Daniel Rybakken from Sweden designed the DR-chair 01 and the DR-dining table 01

The DR Chair 01 combines compact size with comfort and shows the charm of the material through ingenious design and structure. The 'Sumiki' or 'corner blocks', which are normally hidden for strength, are actually shown in this design, which provides a fresh and innovative look. Despite its sturdy construction, the chair is light and takes up little space. Whether in homes or public spaces, this chair fits effortlessly into different environments and creates a pleasant atmosphere.

Ville Kokkonen created the poetic folding screens, available in two sizes. The traditional technique of 'Ashiro-ami' (weaving) is applied to the panel surface to create a rich, typical Japanese appearance.

The World Cup collection is from Wattaru Kumanu himself.Ancient Japanese woodworking techniques, such as the 'Arare-gumi' technique, are applied to the joints of the wood, giving the chair its characteristic shape. Ergonomically designed with soft curves of seat and backrest. These provide firm support for the body, so that the storl sits very comfortably in different positions.

Lightweight and stackable up to three chairs. Supplemented with tables and stools.
